Why Are My Neck and Shoulders Always So Tight?

If you feel like your shoulders are permanently creeping toward your ears, you’re definitely not alone.

Neck and shoulder tension is one of the most common complaints I hear from clients at JV Bodywork in Omaha. Sometimes it feels like a dull ache across the tops of the shoulders. Sometimes it’s a stubborn knot between the shoulder blades. Other times, it shows up as neck stiffness, limited movement, or tension that seems to return no matter how much you stretch.

So why does this area get so tight?

Your Daily Habits Add Up

Think about how much time you spend looking down throughout the day.

Phones, laptops, driving, working at a desk, carrying kids, doing hair, cleaning, cooking—the list goes on.

When you spend hours in similar positions, certain muscles may be working harder than others to support your head, shoulders and upper body. Over time, that can contribute to the familiar tight, tired feeling through the neck and shoulders.

And unfortunately, stretching for a few seconds here and there doesn’t always address everything contributing to that tension.

Stress Can Show Up in Your Body, Too

Have you ever noticed your shoulders tense up when you’re stressed?

Many of us unconsciously brace our bodies throughout the day. You might clench your jaw, raise your shoulders, tighten your abdomen or hold your breath without even realizing you’re doing it.

When stress is ongoing, it can become difficult to recognize just how much tension you’re carrying until someone starts working on those muscles.

Sometimes the first thing I hear when I begin working around a client’s shoulders is:

“I didn’t even realize how tight that was.”

Your Neck and Shoulders Don’t Work Alone

One of the reasons I take an individualized approach to massage is that the place you feel tension isn’t necessarily the only area worth paying attention to.

Your neck, shoulders, upper back, chest, jaw and even the way your shoulder blades are moving all work together.

That’s why a therapeutic massage at JV Bodywork isn’t necessarily 60 minutes of digging into the exact spot that hurts.

Depending on what I’m finding and what you’re experiencing, your session may include work through several related areas and different massage techniques to help your body relax and move more comfortably.

Why Does the Tightness Keep Coming Back?

Massage can feel amazing, but you still have to return to your everyday life afterward.

If you spend another 40 hours at your computer, carry a toddler on the same hip every day, regularly look down at your phone, clench your jaw when you’re stressed, or repeat the same movements at work, those muscles are going to continue being asked to do their jobs.

That doesn’t mean your massage “didn’t work.”

It means massage is one piece of the bigger picture.

Regular movement, changing positions throughout the day, strengthening, stretching when appropriate, getting enough rest, managing stress and receiving regular bodywork can all play a role in how your body feels.

Can Massage Help With Neck and Shoulder Tension?

Massage therapy can be a wonderful tool for helping tight, overworked muscles relax.

During a therapeutic massage, I can adjust the pressure, techniques and areas we focus on based on what you’re experiencing that day. Your session might incorporate traditional massage techniques along with other tools or modalities when appropriate.

And deeper isn’t automatically better.

The goal isn’t to see how much pressure you can tolerate. The goal is to provide thoughtful bodywork that makes sense for your body.

How Often Should You Get a Massage?

There isn’t one schedule that’s right for everyone.

Some clients come in when something starts bothering them. Others find that regular massage works better for them because they’d rather address tension before they reach the “I can’t turn my head” stage.

Your ideal schedule depends on your lifestyle, activity level, stress, goals, budget and how your body responds to massage.

And actually… that’s a whole topic of its own. 😉
